Vancouver, B.C.- The Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit (ISU), made up of RCMP, law enforcement partners and Canadian Forces personnel from across Canada, is sharing the Olympic Spirit with the people of Haiti.
“Many ISU members have served in Haiti or know someone that is currently assisting with the relief efforts. At this time of Olympic joy, we are also reminded of our friends Sergeant Mark Gallagher and Chief Superintendent Doug Coates that were lost during the devastating earthquake. We hope that this initiative furthers their legacy and assists in the rebuilding of Haiti,” said Assistant Commissioner Bud Mercer.
Members on board the three accommodation vessels in Vancouver collected more than $18,000. All donations were presented to the Canadian Red Cross Society, in support of the Haiti Relief fund, at the end of the campaign which wrapped up on February 12th.

Holland America Line generously decided to contribute financially as well. “On behalf of Holland America Line, I am very excited to report that we will match donations towards the Canadian Red Cross - Haitian Relief Effort - up to a maximum of $5,000 US,” says Alexis Puma, Sales Manager of Holland America Line.
According to RCMP Inspector Sean Sullivan, the idea just came up during conversation. The Oosterdam had two unoccupied suites and about 6,000 prospective occupants from the three vessels. “The ISU was looking for a fair way to determine the recipients. I was having dinner with a group of RCMP members and we were talking about these suites. We bounced around several different ideas and one member suggested we allow everyone to enter, but encourage a donation for Haiti as we recently lost C/Supt Doug Coates and Sgt. Mark Gallagher there. That idea was run up the flag pole to Assistant Commisioner Bud Mercer and the idea was approved.”
“Our employees repeatedly stated this was the best idea possible. They like the random draw for the two penthouse suites and the opportunity to recognize Doug and Mark with a donation to the relief efforts in Haiti. Donations poured in from all personnel stationed on the three ships and just over $23,000 was raised,” concluded Inspector Sullivan.
